About Home and Garden Calculator

Home and Garden Calculator is a free resource for homeowners and DIYers who want to plan home and garden projects without the guesswork.

Most material calculators online are buried inside retailer sites — designed to sell product, not to help you understand your project. We built this site to be different: clean, mobile-friendly tools paired with practical guides that explain the "why" behind the numbers.

Who We Are

Home and Garden Calculator is run by a small team of homeowners, gardeners, and hands-on DIYers who live and breathe outdoor projects. Between us we've mulched more beds than we can count, built raised gardens from scratch, hauled gravel by the pickup load, and figured out the hard way that ordering the right amount of material is half the battle.

The calculators and guides on this site come directly from that experience. When a tool asks for a depth, a density, or a bag size, it's because that number matters when you're actually out in the yard — not because a spec sheet said to include it.

Editorial Process

Every calculator and guide on this site is written, reviewed, and maintained by a real person — no AI-generated filler, no scraped content. Our editorial process:

Methodology

Every calculator on this site produces an estimate. Real-world projects vary: soil compacts differently, gravel suppliers sell by slightly different densities, and coverage depends on how carefully material is spread. Our calculators aim to get you close enough to order confidently, with a small buffer built into the guidance where it matters.

Where a number depends on an assumption — bulk density, recommended depth, bag size — we state the assumption in plain text next to the result. If your supplier uses a different density or your project calls for a different depth, the guide explains how to adjust.

We are not a substitute for professional judgment. For structural, drainage, or code-related decisions — retaining walls, drainage systems, load-bearing fill — consult a licensed landscape professional or engineer. See our Disclaimer for the full caveats.

What We Build

Each section of this site combines a calculator with supporting content — depth guides, buying comparisons, FAQs — so you can go from "I need to mulch my beds" to "I know exactly what to buy and how to apply it" in one place.

We're starting with mulch, soil, gravel, and yard planning, and expanding from there into lawn care, fertilizer, and other common homeowner projects.
